Aquaculture continues to be one of the fastest-growing food sectors worldwide. However, disease remains one of the main limitations to its sustainable development. Major economic losses associated with disease outbreaks in fish and shrimp have been documented, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen global aquatic animal health.
Understanding the factors that trigger these diseases, as well as their transmission dynamics in aquatic environments, is key to mitigating their impact. In this context, aquatic animal epidemiology emerges as a fundamental tool to analyze, prevent, and control outbreaks through a systemic and collaborative approach.
As Chair Person and on behalf of the Division of Global Agriculture and Food Systems at the University of Edinburgh, I am pleased to announce the event that will bring together researchers, representatives from international organizations, and experts from both the academic and production sectors to share experiences and concrete solutions: the 4th International Conference on Aquatic Animal Epidemiology (AquaEpi Global IV), organized by the University of Edinburgh alongside leading institutions in aquatic health, with the official support of Agencia Garra as the event producer.
The conference will take place from October 20 to 23, 2026, at Hotel Enjoy Puerto Varas, Chile, making the country the host of a global conversation on aquatic health, sustainability, and scientific collaboration under the One Health approach.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Warm regards,
Fernando O. Mardones

Fisheries and aquaculture are the fastest-growing food production sectors in the world, yet diseases remain the greatest challenge to their sustainability. AquaEpi IV aims to create a platform for dialogue between science, industry, and public policy to address aquatic animal health from a modern, comprehensive, and global epidemiological perspective.
Puerto Varas is a city located in the Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. It sits on the southwestern shore of the expansive Lake Llanquihue, offering breathtaking views of the snow-capped and still-active Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes.
The city is known for its traditional German-style architecture, reflecting its colonial past. The red-and-white Church of the Sacred Heart, built in the early 20th century, stands out with its three striking towers.
